For cooperatives, serving customers comes with a different kind of relationship. Members are also owners, and capital credits are one way that ownership takes shape.
Capital credits have long been part of Camvio’s support for cooperatives. Now, we’ve updated that functionality as we continue to improve the tools our customers use to serve their members. Here’s a closer look at what capital credits are, how they work, and why they matter.
Capital credits represent a member’s share of a cooperative’s margins, or the money remaining after expenses are covered. Instead of distributing those earnings to outside shareholders, a cooperative allocates them to its members.
Each member’s share is typically based on how much business they did with the cooperative during that year, according to the cooperative’s policies. This makes capital credits a direct connection between using the cooperative’s services and participating in its ownership.
There are two key steps in the capital credit process: allocation and retirement.
Allocation is when the cooperative records each member’s share of its margins. That amount becomes part of the member’s equity in the cooperative. An allocation does not mean the member receives a payment right away.
Retirement is when the cooperative returns some of those previously allocated funds to eligible members. The board determines when the cooperative’s financial position allows a return. Depending on the cooperative’s policies, members may receive a check or a credit on their bill.
While those funds remain with the cooperative, they help support operations, maintain infrastructure, and fund improvements. That balance allows the cooperative to invest in reliable service while recognizing its members’ ownership over time.
Capital credits are a reminder that members share in their cooperative’s success. They connect the services members use with an investment in their community.
Clearly explaining how capital credits work helps members understand the value of their ownership, from their first allocation notice to a future payment.
Supporting capital credits isn’t new for Camvio, but we’ve recently updated the functionality to build on the tools already available to our cooperative customers.
Cooperatives have unique needs, and those needs help shape how we continue to improve our platform. These updates reflect our ongoing commitment to software that supports how cooperatives operate and serve their members.
